USAJOBS 2-page resume: 12-point checklist

Federal resumes submitted through USAJOBS are now limited to two pages. OPM's applicant guidance says: Resumes must be no longer than two-pages in length. and Job seekers must choose a resume that is two pages or less to make it searchable and apply for jobs. Use this checklist before you upload.

Source: U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Workforce Policy and Innovation, "Applicant Guidance on the Two-Page Resume Limit" (one-page PDF, accessed 2026-10-02). Rules can change, and each job announcement controls its own application: read both before you apply.

The checklist

  1. Two pages or fewer. Export to PDF and count pages in the PDF, not in your word processor. In your USAJOBS profile, choose a resume of two pages or less: since September 27, 2025 you can edit a stored resume, or upload or build a new one, to meet the limit.
  2. Contact information. Your name and how best to reach you, including email address and phone number.
  3. Job title and employer for each relevant work experience.
  4. Series and grade for every federal position, for example GS-0343-11.
  5. Start and end dates with month and year for each job, for example 05/2019 – 08/2022. Years alone are not enough.
  6. Hours worked per week for each job, for example "40 hours per week".
  7. Descriptions aligned with the job announcement. They must address all required qualifications. Reuse the announcement's own wording where it truthfully describes what you did.
  8. Show the required level. Brief descriptions should show you can perform the tasks at the level stated in the announcement: scope, independence, who you advised, size of budget or workload.
  9. Education, when relevant or required: name of school or institution, completion date, degree type and cumulative GPA. Attach transcripts if the announcement requires them.
  10. Certifications and licenses, when relevant or required: their type and date, plus any documentation the announcement asks for.
  11. Optional details, only when relevant: current security clearance, job-related training, language skills, organizations and affiliations, professional publications, and eligibility for special hiring programs (for example military spouses or individuals with disabilities).
  12. Cut to fit. Prioritize your most relevant and recent experience, use concise results-focused language, focus on skills and competencies, and remove outdated or unrelated experience.

Items 1–12 restate OPM's guidance. The examples (GS-0343-11, "40 hours per week") and the practical tips (counting pages in the exported PDF, reusing the announcement's wording only where it is true) are ours.

Before and after: one bullet

Fictional example

A fictional budget analyst applying to an announcement whose specialized experience mentions "budget execution". The person, the employer and the numbers are invented for illustration. Same experience, rewritten in a Context-Action-Result shape.

Before

Budget Analyst, Example Health Partners, Denver, CO, 2019 – 2022

  • Responsible for budget duties for regional clinics. Worked with SAP. Helped with year-end close.

Missing: month/year dates, hours per week, scale, what you did yourself and the result. "Budget execution" never appears.

After

Budget Analyst, Example Health Partners, Denver, CO | 05/2019 – 08/2022 | 40 hours per week

  • For a 14-site regional clinic network with 220 staff, developed and maintained the annual budget execution plan ($8.4M) in SAP, closing the fiscal year within 0.5% of plan with no audit findings.

Context (14 sites, 220 staff), action using the announcement's term (budget execution plan, SAP), measurable result. One bullet, one requirement.

Write only what you actually did. Every resume line and questionnaire answer is part of a federal application and must be truthful.
